Military spokesman absolutely wrong about al Qaeda in Iraq

[NOTE FROM JOHN: AJ is a former Department of Defense civilian Intelligence Officer who was decorated for his recent civilian service in Iraq.]
The Post reports that the chief spokesman for the U.S. military yesterday called al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) “the principal threat” to Iraqis.
This is, quite simply, completely and totally false.

Boogeyman, or men

A White House aide, quoted from a Wall Street Journal politics blog post about why Bush mentions al Qaeda so much these days —

It’s a name that really resonates, like the boogeyman,

They’re rarely so explicit that treating the populace like scared children is part of the strategy.

an imaginary evil character of supernatural powers, esp. a mythical hobgoblin supposed to carry off naughty children

Senior U.S. intelligence officials tell ABC News new intelligence suggests a small al Qaeda cell is on its way to the United States, or may already be here.

You mean THESE “Al Qaeda?” (nudge nudge wink wink)

Remember in summer 2001, when the media was constantly running stories about Osama bin Laden, “pre-selling” the designated villain prior to the attacks? This feels the same. – M. R.
