My Second Encounter with Maxine Waters: She’s Looking Into Wayward Nukes, but Says No to Saying the “T” Word for Lack of “Facts”
On Saturday October 27th, Maxine Waters received an award from Peace Action West, during its 50th anniversary celebration, for her peacemaking work in the “Out of Iraq Caucus.” After a speech in which she urged us to keep the pressure on Congress and to work to pick up votes for the Democrats in the house and win the White House as the way to end the Iraq War, I decided to follow up with Representative Waters on our previous encounter months earlier- http://www.911blogger.com/node/9793
Update 7/18/07
One third of inmates in state prisons are violent criminals, convicted of homicide, rape, or robbery. But the other two thirds consist mainly of property and drug offenders.
Why? Writes Loury:
A more convincing argument is that imprisonment rates have continued to rise while crime rates have fallen because we have become progressively more punitive: not because crime has continued to explode (it hasn’t), not because we made a smart policy choice, but because we have made a collective decision to increase the rate of punishment.
But I think Loury ignores the two main culprits: Fear and fear-mongering careerism.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters Says “No” to War with Iran and “Yes” to Paying Attention to Brzenzski’s Warning
“But we need to pay attention to Brzenski’s warning right?” and she said “Yes.”

Black Leadership: Unable or Willing to Address Black Mass Incarceration
America’s
undeclared but universal policies of racially selective policing, prosecution
and mass incarceration of its Black citizens have imposed unprecedented strains
on the social and economic viability of Black families and communities – of the
entire African American polity. This malevolent social policy demands a
political response from Black leadership, just as Jim Crow and lynching did in
our grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ day. Why is the current crop of Black
leaders unable to rise to the crisis of this generation – the fact of racially
selective mass incarceration? And if they did, what would such a response look
like?

…to use her time on Fox News, as part of the MLK Day coverage, to bring attention to issues such as the huge incareration rate for blacks in America. A perfect opportunity to bring up police state trending and she acts clueless.
She appeared on Fox News around 10:00 a.m. on 1/15/2007.
By the way, her statement on the Iraq War mostly misses the point as well.

Crime, Punishment, and Vengeance in the Age of Mass Imprisonment
The prison system in the U.S. stands alone in the modern Western world as a model of mass incarceration. The “tough on crime” stance taken by elected officials from across the political spectrum has not halted the resurgence of crime in the last few years, nor has it helped prevent ex-inmates from once again ending up behind bars.
